The clay is not completely dried, however. The plaster draws the moisture out of clay. I remove the clay from the plaster when it&#8217;s a good consistency for wedging (kneading), cut it into smaller pieces and bag it and date it. \u00a0I use the clay when it has &#8220;aged&#8221; a year or more.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Making a plaster slab isn&#8217;t too tricky or labour intensive and I will blog about it one day when I make a new one, as mine is wearing down and slowly disintegrating after being in use for about 7 years now. \u00a0The trick is to buy FRESH plaster and use the plaster right away. \u00a0Plaster takes on moisture from the air and if you have old stuff it probably isn&#8217;t workable. \u00a0I had a bag of plaster that I bought and then stored for two years. \u00a0When I decided to use it, it was as hard as a rock and I had to throw it out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lablanchepoterie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mixing-clay4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-44\" title=\"mixing clay4\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lablanchepoterie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mixing-clay4-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lmserafin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mixing-clay4-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lmserafin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mixing-clay4.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>I use a jug or a ladel to scoop the clay out of the bucket and onto the plaster slab because I can&#8217;t lift the whole bucket to pour it out. \u00a0No need to hurt myself, is there?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lablanchepoterie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mixing-clay5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-45\" title=\"mixing clay5\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lablanchepoterie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mixing-clay5-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lmserafin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mixing-clay5-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lmserafin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/mixing-clay5.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>I smooth out the clay and make it a consistent thickness on the plaster slab. \u00a0It takes about a week or so to firm up so I can remove it from the plaster. \u00a0Each batch of recycled clay weighs about 40-50 pounds after the water has leeched out. \u00a0Ka-ching!!
